This site is a chronicle of the Hi'ilani Eco House project, located on the Big Island of Hawai'i.
All design decisions for the Hi'ilani House are made in the context of creating an environmentally sustainable future for all. In sharing our experience of creating this place, we intend to encourage and actively help others who share the same vision.

Here is a photo at the end of the day on June 26. This photo was taken from roughly the same place as the photo below it, which was taken in May. What a difference!
See the blog entry for more details on the grading.

This photo looks up at the house site, which is located on the flat portion at the top of the hill. The big, beautiful eucalyptus tree will be located outside the front corner of the living room.

Grading has begun!
After carving away one foot from the house site, it appears we will need to go down another two feet to give the foundation a firm footing. Grading by Gary De Rego’s team will continue this week. For more details, see our blog, and new photos.
While the grading continues, we are actively preparing to start the final house layout and begin the foundation work. Yesterday, Robert, Dave, and Robbie did a rough layout on the site to determine what adjustments may be needed in positioning the house on the site
The foundation planning is critical for this project. We will run most of our utilities (electrical and plumbing) in the concrete pad, and we are now actively involved with both electrical and plumbing contractors to prepare for this.
New comment policy
Feel free to comment on any of the Blog entries and ask your own questions.
It used to be the case that we required registration on the site before you could leave a comment. Following up on a suggestion from a good friend (thanks, David!) we are removing that requirement, and we hope this will encourage more folks to join the dialog.
Aloha!
